Staff Opportunities

Community Service

Community Service is one of Hunton & Williams' six core values and "giving back" is an integral part of our firm's culture. Our lawyers are expected to provide at least 40 hours of pro bono service per year and our staff members are encouraged to participate in charitable activities in the communities where they live and work. In fact, the firm allows its employees two full days of time off with pay to participate in local charitable projects each year, as well as up to five days of paid leave to help with rebuilding efforts for victims of major disasters. Additionally, the firm works with more than 115 nonprofit organizations each year, supporting fund-raising events; providing pro bono services; and donating food, clothing and more.

To celebrate the commitment of our employees to community service, we honor those who have made exceptional contributions to civic and charitable activities with our David F. Peters Community Service Staff Awards. These annual awards are named in memory of a firm attorney who helped set the firm's direction for our pro bono efforts in the 1990s and whose life exemplified a commitment to community. In 2007, 17 staff members were honored with David F. Peters Awards for their work with a variety of agencies and organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), Habitat for Humanity, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Feed the Children, Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission, Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged, Wills for Heroes, and a number of churches and synagogues.

"In October 2006, I spent a full week in New Orleans helping low-income homeowners. I can't adequately describe the things I saw. The size and scope of the disaster was (and is) immense, and there is so much that still needs to be rebuilt, in terms of buildings and in terms of lives. But, everyone we met in New Orleans was very appreciative of our being there -- even those not directly receiving our assistance. I can’t thank the firm enough for making this possible for me!"

"Representing the New York office as team leader for the Breast Cancer Walk was such a heart-warming experience. So many people volunteered to help, and I was proud that we were able to raise almost $2,500 to support breast cancer research. Way to go, New York!"

"When I learn about the selfless charitable contributions our staff members make to their communities, I am always impressed. Community service is a core value of the firm. We are thrilled that our folks not only take an avid interest in helping the less fortunate, but also, in doing so, add to the heart and soul of who we are."
