Interview Tips
Regardless of your career goals, Hunton & Williams LLP wishes you the best of luck as you explore the various professional opportunities afforded to you during your time in law school. Interview preparation is an important part of this process.
Tips for Success:
-
Research legal employers and individual offices, if applicable, prior to your on-campus interview so that you know what differentiates them and can ask specific questions about the topics that interest you the most. It is helpful to the employer if your cover letter delineates the office or offices of interest.
-
Try not to schedule on-campus interviews back-to-back, since schedules frequently run over and could require you to be in two places at once. Interviewers make every effort to stay on schedule, but aren’t always successful, so plan for this possibility.
-
Arrive early for your on-campus interview so that the interviewers can be notified and begin to complete their current interview.
-
It is helpful to the employers when recruits respond in a timely manner as to whether they will accept or decline a call-back interview and when they would like it to be scheduled. In general, it is best to continuously communicate with the legal recruiting staff at a particular firm. If you intend to decline an interview, a quick email is appreciated so that the slot can be filled with another candidate.
-
Always confirm your call-back interview schedule before your arrival so that you can research the attorneys with whom you will be meeting.
-
Dress appropriately for your interviews. A firm’s recruiting staff can help clarify any questions about attire.
-
You may have multiple interviews during the Fall Recruiting season and, since this is usually in addition to your coursework and assignments, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Rest assured that you will survive this process!
-
Employers want to know that you have a genuine interest in their firm, company, or agency, so be prepared to discuss reasons why you want to work with a particular employer.
-
Relax during your interviews! Maintain a professional demeanor, but try to let your personality shine through. Be yourself.
-
Callback interviews are a way for you to get to know a firm and vice versa – interviewing is always a two-way street.
-
Comply with all NALP guidelines regarding timing of decisions and the number of offers that can be held open.
