Singapore's population of almost four million is 77 percent Chinese, 14 percent Malay, 8 percent Indian, and 1 percent Eurasian and people of other descent. There are four official languages in Singapore: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English. As the language of business and administration, English is widely spoken and understood. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, and speak their mother tongue as well as English.
